Reviews by Year: Special Projects: IntroductionI have no official role at the Books of Horror (facebook.com) Facebook group, beyond being one of almost 50,000 members who enjoy the company of like-minded horror fans. It's a very busy group with countless posts every single day, but its real value is in its members being supportive of each other and the genre, while also being thoroughly open to indie publishing. Many of those members are authors and most of them are self-published or published by small presses, though there are a few Grand Masters among the active membership too. Hello, Ramsey Campbell! Nowadays, the prominent titles tend to be ones competing in the Indie Brawl, an annual bracketed event, but, before those began, I asked the membership to highlight all the books that came up all the time, for whatever reason, and compiled them into a Go To List (facebook.com). I've been a horror fan for most of my life but I'm out of date with what's happening in the field nowadays, especially with indie releases. I'd only read two books from this list, Alma Katsu's The Hunger and, right as I was starting this project, Cassandra Khaw's Nothing But Blackened Teeth, though I had read other books by some of these authors, like Christina Henry, Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Catriona Ward. My plan to catch up was to get hold of everything on this Go To List, read it all and review these books one per month at the Nameless Zine. Once done, I'll collate them into an Apocalypse Later zine. To read the reviews here, just click on the covers below (which represent the editions I read) or the titles below them. I have an Amazon gift registry set up for this project, so if anyone wants to buy me a copy of a book from this list to review, with my thanks, you can find it here (amazon.com). Thank you to Dee Astell, Wendy Bridges, Ivy Chapman, Heather Flanders, Michael Flanders and Shawn Flanders for buying me books from this registry for review. |

Jon Athan - The Groomer I feel like there should be a Darcy Coates and a Matt Shaw in there too, but no single title stood out for either. AlternativesMost authors showed up on the list with a clear and obvious title. A few, however, weren't so clear as multiple titles by them showed up in similar quantities. I've made sure to read one book by each of these authors for this project, but should list the alternatives provided here too.
